Read e-books!

We have e-books available through Follett’s Destiny Discover app and Mackin’s MackinVia Reader. Students log in with their 6 digit number and Chromebook password.

Download Mackin’s app

Troubleshooting tips for MackinVia: If you choose Utica Elementary as the school and then it just goes to a blank screen, you may have a pop-up blocker causing the trouble. If you are unable to disable the pop-up blocker, then leave the school field blank and log in with utica as the username and jets as the password. This will give you access to the e-books, even though you won’t be able to check them out for offline access.
Elementary time slot

The library could use some volunteers!

Elementary Time Slot

If you have half a day every week or every other week, we would like to plug you in! Please contact Mrs. Karnes at kkarnes@gccschools.com. Volunteers shelve books and help students check out books, along with helping with various other projects. Come be a part of the library community! All volunteers must fill out a criminal history background check. If you don’t have a regular time slot, we always need extra help at book fair time. If there’s a grandmother or other family member with extra time, let them know about the opportunity. Grandparents love seeing their grandchildren at school!

Just the Basics: Be in the Know!

All students have a scheduled library period during the week. During this time, children return and check out library books, as well as listen to stories and learn information skills. Kindergarten students check out 1 book at a time. First through fifth grade students check out 2 books at a time. We strongly encourage them to get one book that is on their reading level. The books are due in one week when they come back to library class. Once the book is a week late, we will print an overdue notice for your child, but we do not charge late fines. We just encourage the child to return the books and check-out privileges are suspended until the book is returned. If a book is lost or damaged, we ask that the replacement cost be paid so we can purchase a new copy. The replacement cost is listed on the late notice.

Students are encouraged to come in and exchange library books when they are finished reading their current book. Pass time is every day 9:00-9:45.

*If a child has a library book out, discarded books are still available to borrow. The barcode will be marked through with a D, and the book will be in really bad shape. We encourage students to return those D books as well.

*If there is a lost or damaged book on your child’s record from last year, check-out privileges are suspended until the book is returned or paid for. You will receive a notice if your child owes for a book.

Reading Counts!

Reading Counts is a reading motivation program to track how much the students are reading outside of class and how well they are comprehending the books. They earn points as they take and pass quizzes on books they’ve read.
When a child has read a book, he/she sits down at a computer, logs in, and takes a 10-question, multiple choice quiz on the book. If 7 or more questions are answered correctly, the child earns the points for that book. If 6 or fewer questions are answered correctly, the child is encouraged to reread the book and try again. Each child has three chances to pass each quiz. Each child will need to take different quizzes this year than what they took last year.

Our goal is to motivate all students to do their personal best and read as much as they can, not just in school. On each library day, points earned will be celebrated and certificates handed out. (See the point levels at the right.) As each award level is reached, the child receives a certificate and gets to pick out a small prize. At the bronze, silver, and gold levels, pins will be handed out with the certificates and we will announce their names in the morning assembly. At the end of the year, students who have earned the points for the gold star will be recognized in the Awards Assembly and given a medal.
